Staying at No. 124 Brighton, Guest House Hotels

Ok, hear me out. I know this blog is technically for travel with kids. But this was a rare child free night away for us to celebrate our 12th Wedding Anniversary. The good news is that Guest House Hotels are child friendly so it will hopefully tick everybody’s boxes! If you’re looking for a boutique, curated small hotel without breaking the bank {since when did UK staycations get SO expensive?!} then this is such a great find. We first stayed at a Guest House Hotel a couple of years back for a Christmas, again adults only, escape to Bath. We would always choose a night away over a physical gift. We really love how special and exclusive they feel, the range of locations {York, Margate, Brighton and Bath}, the comfy beds, the vibe, the unlimited pantry and good food, they’re also really good value. They describe themselves as one off boutique hotels in happening hot spots and I couldn’t agree more.

No. 124 is located perfectly on the seafront, bang opposite the Old Pier and the new i360 rotating viewing platform, I think owned by British Airways. You’re literally a stone’s throw from the beach with heavenly views from the sea view facing bedrooms {we could literally watch the waves and the changing pink skies whilst sat in bed} along with the main shops/restaurants and pier just a short walk away. We stayed in room 18, a ‘large guest room with a sea view’. You can find all of the room categories here. It felt so calming with soft pink painted floorboards, neutral walls, tasteful artwork and a killer triple bay window with a bright blue sea outside.

Don’t miss the pantry for drinks, fruit, crisps, popcorns & sweets to take to your room at any point along with the stylish lounges & bar areas to relax in.

We really loved drinks on the terrace, dinner at Pearly Cow {well worth booking in advance} in the atmospheric candle lit steak & seafood grill restaurant. As luck would have it, Pearly Cow had changed literally that day to it’s summer menu with the best grilled prawns we’ve ever had in the UK, lobster and the catch of the day for our mains and then raspberry souffles and clotted cream ice cream for pudding. The interiors are stunning everywhere here.

It depends on which rate you book as to whether breakfast is included or not. It’s a really delicious spread though so is worth getting, you can choose from unlimited continental options {chia pudding, sourdough toast, pastries, fruit, yogurt & granola} then one cooked a la carte option. We shared the Eggs royale, neptune version with crab and a smoked salmon, scrambled egg on rye. We opted to sit outside as it was such a nice morning, a total dream with the view of the beach from the terrace.

Our only regret was not booking a visit to their Field Trip spa {although we did on our Bath trip, they have some great stay & spa deals with treatment credit and amazing copper rooms for two}.

Fear not if you’re looking to visit with children, it can still be fun as well as special. You’ll find a Yoto Player with a library of audio cards to choose from, Bedtime books and toys, a Mini teepee which makes for a magical story-reading-hideaway in every room and toys available to borrow for plenty of beach fun. They also have two pairs of interconnecting rooms, you’d just need to give reservations a quick call to check if they are available for your dates.  Each pair is a large guest room with sea view, connecting with a guest room with sea view.  The Hideout Suite has a sofabed suitable for two children 12 & under and some of the larger guest rooms with seaview and large guest rooms with balcony can take one extra bed or cot.

It can even be dog friendly if you pay an extra £25 per dog per stay in most rooms and they provide a comfy dog bed & unlimited dog treats! Just be aware that you can’t dine inside with them.

It’s well worth joining the free Guest Best program and you’ll get a Noon check out, up to 10% off best rates and 20% off spa treatments.

Brighton always has so much going on. We had booked parking in advance {advisable for Brighton} and then dropped our bag off before having a mooch around the lanes before getting lunch & checking in. We used to come to Brighton a lot and have always loved their mix of quirky independents along with high street favourites {they even opened an IKEA in the shopping centre!}. Then had a leisurely afternoon at the hotel & even took a nap - THE DREAM. Then we went for cocktails & dinner downstairs, had a balmy evening walk along the sea front and marvelled at getting to miss bedtime for the first time in a really long time - don’t get me wrong, we love our kiddos so much but if you do kids bedtimes then you will KNOW the joy at getting a night off especially in this light/heat!. The next morning we had breakfast outside and reluctantly checked out before taking a walk along the beachfront along to Brighton Marina.

Our favourite Brighton spots worth adding to your list:

  • Papersmiths for Stationery & cute books

  • Edition Store

  • Junior Edition for kids

  • Dinner is a whole store solely for gifts to take for anyone hosting - genius!

  • The Hot Sauce shop made me laugh, but had such an incredible array from around the world.

  • Dishoom Permit Room Brighton {always adore Dishoom}

  • The North Laines in general

  • Snoopers Paradise

  • The Flour Pot Bakery

  • Wahaca Brighton for fab fish tacos, really fresh Mexican street food & nachos in amongst the lanes near the Pavilion

  • Photomatic for Photo Booth fun

  • Fika Bakery Cafe

  • The Pier!

  • A new-ish sauna area has opened up called Yellowave Brighton, it’s got sports, saunas and is next door to Sea Lanes Brighton, an outdoor pool on the beach with some cool coffee shops & eateries as part of it. It felt very Aussie!

  • There are walks all the way along the coast either side. The Brighton undercliff walks from the Marina are meant to be nice - we ran out of time! And the other way, Hove is a gorgeous spot.

For those with children you’ll find the Sea Life Centre, Pier Amusements, plenty of playgrounds along the sea front and some fab museums. I wrote this post about our day trip there last February and we’re keen to go back with them again soon.
